Good Bye

The patients came to say good bye and get their final check up.  It was a happy moment for me to see all their faces again.  Part of me felt a little guilty because I could not remember their names especially in one case in particular. The little girl from Coca who was suffering from the altitude searched for me to give me a book of drawings she had done for me.  I was surprised she remembered me because she was so sick the first day in the hotel and when I returned to the hospital, there were so many doctors around her.  I was the one who stayed behind to make sure she finally got a meal because when she was admitted back to the hospital the team of doctors had to release her to the Ecuadorian hospital.  Now that she was not in the team’s care, they could not order that she get fed so I sent Roy over to the nurse station and had him tell them she was off the oxygen, completely saturated and needed to eat!

Another wonderful thing happened today, Anderson, my new boyfriend came in and could not talk after his clef palate surgery.  When the doctors tried to get him to talk he would not because it was too painful.  When the examination was over he came over to give me a big kiss and finally talked.  Later his Aunt asked if Miguel (Mike) Rodericks and I would be his Godfather and Godmother.  I said yes which means I need to come back next year for his confirmation.  With any luck, he will come back but who knows how long his aunt will be able to support him, however, his Father did show up at the hospital the day after his surgery.

Well tensions were up at the end of the day and it’s hard to say if it is depression because it’s the end of the trip, exhaustion or what but it was a great trip and there was a lot of rewards for everyone!
